Abstract

This article examines the intricate relationship between gender, sexuality, and education through an ecological lens. Focusing mainly on Italy and acknowledging a time in history when issues related to gender and sexuality have become diriment on the agenda of conservative forces and play crucial role in the national and international public and political arena, it investigates how in formal and informal educational contexts simultaneously serve as arenas for both reinforcing and challenging the dominant gender order. The paper focuses on this tension between change and maintenance of the status quo and how it takes shape in a complex social scenario in which traditional educational actors have been joined (and often compete with) others, digital media above all. Furthermore, the article addresses the current crisis in public education, where resource constraints and shifting missions are redefining its institutional nature, impacting its relationship with families and educators; autonomy. Against this background, this article act as a compass to navigate the field of gender, sexuality and education.
